Is switching power providers a good idea for me?

The Company

  • Are DP&L Energy and DPL Energy Resources the same as Dayton Power & Light?

    No, but they are affiliated.

DPL Energy Resources, which also does business as DP&L Energy, is a competitive retail supplier of electricity and has been helping customers save money on their energy costs since 2001. DPL Energy Resources and DP&L Energy sell electricity to our customers at market-based prices rather than the regulated prices offered by utilities.

The Dayton Power & Light Company is an electric utility regulated by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. DPL Energy Resources and Dayton Power & Light are both owned by the same parent company, DPL Inc. Although DPL Energy Resources and Dayton Power & Light are affiliated, they are operated independently per the rules and regulations of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio.

  • What impact will the AES acquisition have on this offer or my contract?

The proposed acquisition will have no impact. The offer is still available, and any contract entered into between a customer and DPL Energy Resources or DP&L Energy will be honored by AES when the acquisition is complete.

  • Why doesn’t Dayton Power & Light just lower my rate?

Regulated electric utilities (such as Dayton Power & Light) charge rates that are set by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO). Pricing from competitive suppliers (such as DPL Energy Resources and DP&L Energy) is not set by the PUCO, so we can set our pricing according to market conditions. With lower wholesale electricity prices, now is a great time to switch and take advantage of the savings.

  • I am on a Budget Bill, what will happen?

Your DP&L Energy charges for generation and transmission will be billed at their actual amount each month and will not be subject to budget billing. You will continue to be on a budget bill for Dayton Power & Light’s distribution-related charges and Dayton Power & Light will adjust those charges as they have previously.

  • Are all Dayton Power & Light customers eligible?

The only Dayton Power & Light customers who are not eligible to switch are residential customers currently enrolled in the Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP).  This program is administered by the Ohio Department of Development for low income customers and they are not eligible for Ohio Electric Choice.
